Powys schools are set to receive a significant funding increase of £7.4 million in the next financial year, as recommended by the county council’s cabinet. This allocation aims to address the growing financial pressures faced by schools, including rising pay costs and increased spending demands.

The proposed budget increase is part of the council’s annual budget plan and will be allocated to the schools’ delegated budget to ensure they have the necessary resources to deliver the Curriculum for Wales and provide high-quality education for all young people in Powys.

Cabinet Member for a Learning Powys, Councillor Pete Roberts, emphasized the importance of this investment:

“Allocating more than £7 million to schools is a significant investment, especially in a year where balancing the overall budget will be challenging. We are committed to fully funding the formula principles to ensure schools have the resources they need.”

The decision to increase the schools’ budget comes amid a challenging financial climate for the council, which is also facing a proposed 13.5% council tax rise to help balance its books. However, the cabinet believes that investing in education is crucial for the future of Powys.

The proposed budget increase will be subject to final approval by the full council.
